Iglu-Dorf Zermatt

Zermatt, Switzerland

Iglu-Dorf's Zermatt village is rebuilt each winter on the Gornergrat side of the valley, at altitude and within sight of the Matterhorn. Sleeping chambers are carved from packed snow and fitted with insulated mats and expedition-grade sleeping bags; interior temperatures hold at a few degrees below freezing regardless of the weather outside. Guests reach the village by mountain railway and a short walk, eat a hot evening meal on site, and the whole structure melts back into the slope when the season ends. Because the village is made and unmade annually, no two winters produce quite the same layout.
